Illinois auto insurance requirements

The Illinois Department of Insurance states you must carry the following minimum coverages:

  • Bodily Injury Liability: $25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident
  • Property Damage Liability: $20,000 per accident
  • Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury: $25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident
  • Underinsured Motorist Bodily Injury: Required if you purchase higher limits of Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury coverage.

These are minimums and we always recommend more adequate coverage.

Comprehensive and Collision coverage, often referred to as full coverage, are not required by the state. However, if you have a loan on your vehicle, your lender will require you to have full coverage.

Average auto insurance cost in Illinois

According to Kaggle, the average cost for auto insurance in Illinois is $878 per year. This is for policies with minimum coverage and liability only. Of course, if you have adequate coverage as we discussed above, you're likely going to see a higher rate.
